Our Founder’s Story
At the age of 8, my parents took my sister and I to visit my mother’s homeland of Haiti. We were able to see where she grew up, explored historical sites, and visited her childhood school.
During that visit, my parents took us to the orphanage which we had been supporting. It was there that I witnessed the reality of what an impoverished community looked like. Unlike many cliches, I did not think of the orphanage as a place for unloved or abandoned children, but a place where children were brought by parents who loved them very much. The community they were born into was so poverty stricken, that these families knew they couldn’t provide their children with a safe & stable home. Some children were healthy, while others faced disabilities, AIDS, and major medical issues.
At one point during this visit, there were about 10 or 15 children who were my age playing outside in the courtyard. I noticed a few of them wearing clothes our family had donated to them, some of which I recognized as mine. What happened next still blows me away to this day. As kids do, we played, then gathered in a circle, held hands, and sang songs while circling. Everyone was smiling and laughing. There was so much joy and love.
I don’t remember much else from that trip. However, the one memory that plays over and over in my mind is that of our visit to the orphanage. It’s not so much a sad memory, but one that stays with me and has shaped my dedication to not only children in Haiti, but other non-profits who need our help.
One of my personal philosophies is “generosity above all else”. It has been embedded in my DNA from birth, as I’ve watched my family members and friends work tirelessly to help those less fortunate.
DenTen follows that same philosophy, and we are committed to giving back. DenTen was founded with the intention to make a positive impact in the insurance industry, on our employees, and on the clients we serve. And it all began with that first trip to Haiti years ago.
Philanthropy plays a significant role in our service model, as DenTen plans to integrate regular local donations and sponsorships into its marketing and financial plans. It is our mission to make a global impact on medical care and save lives around the world as well. We are committed to building and maintaining a hospital in Haiti and have plans to do much more in our global communities.
